Demographics

According to the census of last year, the total population of Quarah was around 56 million, of whom 26 million were male and 30 million were female.

Although Quarah is a large country, almost 70% of the population lives in the big cities located in the north. In these cities, and especially in the capital, the most people live in densely-populated slums. Only the richest and most fortunate can afford to live in the flourishing centre or the quite suburbs.

Most people of the lower classes in the north work for the biggest company of Quarah, Gasval. Gasval's main business is gasexploitation and was founded 20 years ago by the communists, but General Mahas reformed it two years ago. It is said that he still holds the power within this company and that most profit from it goes to the pockets of the rich. The people in the south live from agriculture, tourism and the sale of baboons droppings.

Quarah doesn’t have a lot of immigrants because it struggled a lot for the last decades and its population is known for its rude mentality. On the other side the country suffers from a migration wave of young people from the lower classes who flee to the neighbouring countries in the north. These young people are tired of the hard labour they have to do and getting nothing in return. Because of this migration wave the age structure of Quarah is slowly changing. If this trend continues the population growth will stagnate and the country will lose one of its economic benefits, cheap workforces.
